Plantain Leaf (Plantago major) — Bulk Dried Herb
Plantain Leaf (Plantago major)
Broadleaf Plantain is one of the most universally distributed and historically used plants on earth — a humble, resilient perennial that grows in lawns, roadsides, garden paths, and disturbed soils across virtually every inhabited region of the world. So ubiquitous was it in the wake of European colonization that Native American peoples called it “White Man’s Foot,” observing that it seemed to spring up wherever European settlers walked. Yet despite its commonplace appearance, Plantain has one of the richest and most cross-cultural botanical histories of any plant in the world.
Our Plantain leaf is certified organic, cut and sifted from the aerial parts harvested at peak maturity.

About the Plant
Native to Europe and northern and central Asia, Plantago major has naturalized across the entire temperate and subtropical world and is now one of the most widely distributed plants on earth. It is a perennial herb that produces a basal rosette of broad, oval leaves with 5–9 prominent parallel veins and tall, slender spikes of tiny greenish flowers. The plant is extraordinarily resilient, thriving in compacted soils, heavy foot traffic, and disturbed habitats where few other plants can survive. It is not related to the banana-like plantain fruit (Musa species). Plantain was one of the nine sacred herbs of the Anglo-Saxons, listed in the Old English medical text Lacnunga as “Waybread,” and has been used in virtually every botanical tradition that has encountered it.
Traditional Context
Plantain has been used by Native American peoples across numerous nations, by European folk herbalists since antiquity, in Ayurvedic medicine, and in traditional Chinese medicine. It appears in the writings of Dioscorides, Pliny, and virtually every major European herbalist. It was one of the most important plants in Anglo-Saxon botanical medicine and remains a beloved first-aid botanical in contemporary Western herbalism, valued particularly for its affinity with the skin and mucous membranes.
