Milk Thistle Seed Powder (Silybum marianum) — Bulk Dried Herb
Milk Thistle Seed Powder (Silybum marianum)
Milk Thistle is one of the most extensively researched and widely used botanicals in contemporary Western herbalism — a striking, spiny annual or biennial of the daisy family whose large, white-veined leaves and purple flower heads have made it one of the most recognizable plants in the European botanical tradition. Its seeds contain silymarin — a complex of flavonolignans unique to the Milk Thistle — which has been the subject of thousands of scientific studies and is one of the most well-characterized botanical compounds in the world.
Our Milk Thistle seed is certified organic, ground to a fine powder to maximize bioavailability of its botanical constituents.

About the Plant
Native to the Mediterranean region, Silybum marianum has naturalized across Europe, the Americas, Australia, and much of the temperate world. It is a robust annual or biennial that grows to 1.5 meters in height, producing large, deeply lobed, spiny leaves with distinctive white marbling along the veins — a feature that, according to Christian legend, was caused by a drop of the Virgin Mary’s milk falling on the plant (hence “Marian Thistle” and “Milk Thistle”). The plant produces large, solitary purple flower heads that mature into seeds bearing a silky pappus. The seeds contain silymarin — a complex of at least seven flavonolignans including silybin, silydianin, and silychristin — which is concentrated primarily in the seed coat and is poorly soluble in water, making alcohol extraction or ground seed preparations more effective than simple water infusions.
Traditional Context
Milk Thistle has been used in European botanical traditions since the time of Dioscorides and Pliny. It appears in the writings of major European herbalists including John Gerard and Nicholas Culpeper and was used in medieval European monastic medicine. In the 20th century it became one of the most extensively researched botanicals in the world, particularly in Germany, where standardized silymarin extracts are widely used and prescribed. It remains one of the top-selling botanical supplements in the United States and Europe.
