Agrimony Herb (Agrimonia eupatoria)

Agrimony is one of the quiet treasures of European botanical tradition — a slender, graceful perennial of the rose family whose delicate yellow flower spikes have graced hedgerows, woodland edges, and meadows across Europe and western Asia for centuries. Gentle in character yet rich in botanical history, Agrimony has been a staple of European folk herbalism since at least the time of the ancient Greeks and appears in virtually every major European herbal from the medieval period onward.

Our Agrimony is certified organic, cut and sifted from the aerial parts harvested at peak flowering.

About the Plant

Agrimonia eupatoria is a perennial herb that grows to about 60–90 cm in height, producing pinnate leaves with alternating large and small leaflets, and tall slender spikes of small five-petaled yellow flowers that bloom from June through August. The plant is found throughout Europe, western Asia, and North Africa, growing in dry grasslands, hedgerows, and the edges of woodlands. Its hooked fruits cling readily to passing animals and clothing, aiding in seed dispersal. The genus name Agrimonia is believed to derive from the Greek argemone, a plant used for eye conditions, while the species epithet eupatoria honors Mithridates Eupator, the ancient king of Pontus renowned for his knowledge of botanical antidotes.

Traditional Context

Agrimony has been documented in European botanical literature since the time of Dioscorides and Pliny the Elder. It appears in Anglo-Saxon herbals, medieval European monastic medicine, and the writings of major herbalists including John Gerard and Nicholas Culpeper, who described it as “a most admirable remedy.” It was used in traditional European folk medicine as a gentle, nourishing botanical and remains a popular herb in contemporary Western herbalism, particularly in the British herbal tradition.
