Yellow Dock Root (Rumex crispus) — Bulk Dried Herb
Yellow Dock Root (Rumex crispus)
Yellow Dock is one of the most widely distributed and deeply rooted botanicals in the Western herbal tradition — a tenacious perennial of the buckwheat family whose long, yellow taproot has been used by herbalists, foragers, and indigenous peoples across the Northern Hemisphere for centuries. Found in disturbed soils, roadsides, meadows, and farmland across Europe, Asia, and North America, Yellow Dock is a plant of remarkable resilience and botanical significance, valued for its bitter, astringent, and iron-rich character.
Our Yellow Dock root is certified organic, cut and sifted to preserve its full botanical character.

About the Plant
Native to Europe and western Asia, Rumex crispus has naturalized across virtually the entire temperate world and is now found on every inhabited continent. It is a robust perennial that grows to 1.5 meters in height, producing a basal rosette of long, lance-shaped leaves with distinctively wavy or curled margins (hence “crispus” — Latin for curled), tall flowering stems bearing dense clusters of small greenish flowers, and three-winged reddish-brown seeds. The plant’s most distinctive feature is its long, yellow taproot — which can reach 30 cm or more in depth — whose yellow color is due to the presence of anthraquinone glycosides and tannins. Yellow Dock is closely related to Burdock and Dandelion in its traditional botanical applications and is frequently used alongside them in Western herbal formulas.
Traditional Context
Yellow Dock has been used by numerous Native American peoples, including the Cherokee, Iroquois, and Ojibwe, as a food plant and botanical preparation. In European botanical tradition it appears in the writings of Dioscorides, Culpeper, and Gerard. It was used extensively by 19th century Eclectic physicians in North America and remains a staple of contemporary Western herbalism, particularly in formulas targeting the liver, blood, and digestive system.
