About the Plant
Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, Verbena officinalis is a perennial herb that grows to about 60–90 cm in height, producing deeply lobed, toothed leaves and slender, branching spikes of tiny five-petaled lilac to pale pink flowers. The plant grows in disturbed soils, roadsides, waste places, and dry grasslands across its native range and has naturalized in parts of North America. Despite its modest appearance, Vervain has one of the most remarkable cultural histories of any European plant. It was considered sacred by the Romans, who used it to purify altars and temples, and by the Druids, who gathered it at midsummer with elaborate ceremony. It appears in the writings of Pliny, Dioscorides, and virtually every major European herbalist from the medieval period onward.

Vervain holds a unique position in Western botanical history as a plant of both profound spiritual significance and practical herbal use.
