Skullcap Herb (Scutellaria lateriflora) — Bulk Dried Herb
Skullcap Herb (Scutellaria lateriflora)
American Skullcap is one of the most beloved nervine botanicals in the North American herbal tradition — a delicate, shade-loving perennial of the mint family whose small blue flowers and gentle character have made it a staple of Western herbalism for over two centuries. Native to the moist woodlands and stream banks of eastern North America, Skullcap was used by numerous Native American peoples before being adopted by 18th and 19th century Eclectic physicians, who considered it one of their most important botanical remedies.
Our Skullcap is certified organic, cut and sifted from the aerial parts harvested at peak flowering.

About the Plant
Native to eastern North America from Quebec to Florida and westward to the Great Plains, Scutellaria lateriflora is a perennial herb that grows to about 60–90 cm in height, producing opposite, toothed leaves and small, two-lipped blue to violet flowers that emerge from the leaf axils in summer. The genus name Scutellaria derives from the Latin scutella (a small dish or shield), referring to the distinctive shield-shaped protuberance on the upper lip of the calyx. The common name “Skullcap” refers to this same helmet-like feature of the flower. The plant grows in moist, rich soils in partial shade, often along stream banks and in woodland clearings.
Traditional Context
Skullcap was used by several Native American nations, including the Cherokee, who used it in ceremonial contexts and as a botanical preparation. It was adopted by 18th century American herbalists and became one of the most important botanicals in 19th century Eclectic medicine, where it was classified as a nervine tonic. It appears prominently in the writings of Eclectic physicians including John King and Harvey Felter and remains one of the most widely used nervine botanicals in contemporary Western herbalism.
Adulteration Note
