Lily of the Valley Herb (Convallaria majalis)
Lily of the Valley is one of the most exquisite and botanically significant plants of the European woodland flora — a delicate, shade-loving perennial whose nodding white bell-shaped flowers and intoxicating fragrance have made it a symbol of purity, renewal, and the arrival of spring across European cultures for centuries. It is the national flower of Finland, a traditional May Day flower in France (muguet), and one of the most beloved plants in the Western botanical canon.
Important Note: Lily of the Valley is a potent botanical that contains cardiac glycosides and should be handled and used with great care and respect. This product is offered for educational, research, and experienced practitioner use only.

About the Plant
Native to the cool temperate forests of Europe and northern Asia, Convallaria majalis is a rhizomatous perennial that spreads by underground runners to form dense colonies on the forest floor. It produces two or three broad, lance-shaped leaves and a single arching stem bearing 5–15 small, nodding, bell-shaped white flowers with a famously sweet and complex fragrance. The plant produces small red berries in autumn. Lily of the Valley has been cultivated in European gardens since at least the 13th century and appears in medieval illuminated manuscripts, Renaissance paintings, and the botanical illustrations of every major European herbalist. It contains a group of cardiac glycosides — including convallatoxin and convallotoxol — that have made it a subject of significant botanical and pharmacological study.
Traditional Context
Lily of the Valley has been documented in European botanical literature since the medieval period, appearing in the writings of major herbalists including John Gerard and Nicholas Culpeper. It was used in traditional European folk medicine and was officially listed in numerous European pharmacopoeias in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It remains a subject of botanical research and is studied in the context of cardiac glycoside chemistry.
