Anise Seed (Pimpinella anisum)

Anise is one of the oldest cultivated aromatic plants in the world — a delicate annual of the carrot family whose small, ridged seeds carry a warm, sweet, distinctly licorice-like fragrance that has been prized in culinary, botanical, and spiritual traditions across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and beyond for at least four thousand years. It was cultivated in ancient Egypt, documented by Hippocrates and Dioscorides, traded along the Silk Road, and remains one of the most universally recognized aromatic botanicals in the world today.

Our Anise seed is certified organic, whole, and carefully dried to preserve its essential oils and aromatic character.

About the Plant

Native to the eastern Mediterranean and southwestern Asia, Pimpinella anisum is a slender annual that grows to about 50 cm, producing feathery lower leaves, more divided upper leaves, and flat-topped clusters of tiny white flowers (umbels) that give way to the aromatic seeds. The plant has been cultivated since at least 1500 BCE — it appears in ancient Egyptian medical papyri and was documented by Theophrastus, Dioscorides, and Pliny. It was used as currency to pay taxes in ancient Rome and was one of the first spices traded between the Old and New Worlds. Anise is distinct from Star Anise (Illicium verum), which is botanically unrelated but shares a similar aromatic profile due to the presence of the same primary aromatic compound, anethole.

Traditional Context

Anise seed has one of the longest and most cross-cultural histories of any aromatic botanical. It appears in ancient Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Arab, and medieval European botanical traditions. It has been used as a culinary spice, a digestive botanical, a flavoring for spirits and confections, and a component of traditional herbal preparations across virtually every culture that has encountered it. It remains a key ingredient in numerous traditional liqueurs including ouzo, pastis, arak, and sambuca.
